This is one of our special internet tools to help you get a grasp of the concepts involved in the calculation of data usage. The basis of data calculation is based on the average gigabytes you use while entertaining your daily online activities. Here, “online” refers to internet browsing, social media, music apps (e.g. Pandora, Spotify), TV streaming and the such. For businesses, we would also consider VOIP installation as a data usage influencer. Estimate how different internet activities affect your data usage on a monthly basis. Adjust the scrollers below by assigning an average amount for each online activity. In doing so, you need to account for your whole household or office. Meaning that if you have 10 employees, you need to multiply that average data usage by 10 to have an accurate data calculation. For example if you have 2 people in your household each watching TV for 3 hours on separate devices, your total would be 6 hours of streaming video.
General browsing, reading the news, banking and other mundane activities on the web. This uses on average 0.02GB/hour of data.
Listening to music on Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music. On average streaming music uses data at 0.01GB/hour.
Reviewing, writing emails on a daily basis. Emailing uses approximately 0.000033GB/email.
Downloading or uploading photos will use approximately 0.005454GB/photo.
Surfing or posting on social media Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn. This online activity uses approximately 0.05GB/hour.
Video conferences or using platforms such as Skype, Facetime. Video chats use an average of 0.34GB/hour.
Watching video or tv content using internet broadband connection (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube). Streaming video uses on average 0.75GB/hour. Our tip: make sure to check your provider data caps, to make sure you do not get overcharged for streaming too much content.
Online gaming refers to playing games on a website or using a device such as Xbox or Playstation. This scroller doesn’t take into account downloading games which uses way more data. Playing games uses on average 0.02GB/hour.
